Nice to hear from you and thanks once again for your assistance in getting the shots. I’d be interested to see your photos of the other areas. It’s so sad to see the state that the old place has fallen into. Somehow it wouldn’t seem so bad if something constructive was being done with the site. I’d always hoped to do a similar project on Freemans Quay but haven’t got around to organising it as yet. It’s certainly a great a facility and undeniably progress for Durham.

Hi Rob,

I forgot you came in and took these photos just prior to the facility closing. I would just like to say very nice pics it brings back a lot of memories. The sand stone columns at the shallow end of the large pool were one of the nice features and i remember talking to a council architect about them and he believed they came from the original pool on the same site (around 1850′s) and there was talk of them being a feature at Freemans Quay but unfortunately it never materialised. The windows behind the seating on the balcony were original to the building made of brass and features like the no boots sign on the poolside floor gave the unique character that a lot of modern pools don’t have. There was lots of art deco features some of which you have captured including the main hall ceiling with the decorative cornice and the sea horse designs on the rails around the the balcony. Its a shame you didn’t get some pics of the upstairs rooms too as these were all original with period fireplaces and parquet flooring throughout. I took quite a few photos myself and when i have time i will dig them out and forward them on if you want them.

Hi Paul. Yes it has to a certain extent. I’m certainly picking up some hits that I wouldn’t otherwise have picked up. Probably 60% of my hits are now coming via my targeted URLs rather than direct to robbirrell.com. So I guess that’s a good result.

Remember being brought here (circa 1958) by my teachers from St Godric’s RC School, in the City. to be taught how to swim. We were all lined up along the side of the pool and pushed in by the instructor! I have been very wary of water ever since and still cannot swim.

I’ve just re-visited the site for quite some considerable time and it’s not only grown but is also looks extremely professional, etc., even when compared to the sites of many household names – it must have taken an ‘eternity’ to construct!
